Flagler Schools Students Make Gains Across the Board

Thursday, June 8, 2017 - 1:02pm

The Florida Department of Education released the results from state assessment tests earlier today (6/8/17). There were plenty of bright spots for Flagler Schools in those results. Says Superintendent James Tager, “We are always looking to improve our scores, but I am extremely excited at what we’re seeing with our scores. You look at the trends and our students are either at or above the state average in every subject but one.”

The Florida Standards Assessments test students in English Language Arts and mathematics. End of Course Exams (EOC) test students in Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Biology, Civics and U.S. History.

According to the Florida Department of Education, 58% of Flagler students in grades 3-10 scored a Level 3 or higher in English Language Arts. That compares to the state average of 54%. Students in grades 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 either increased or maintained their scores compared to last year.

In math, 65% of our students in grades 3-8 scored a Level 3 or higher, versus the state average of 59%. That’s a two point increase from last year.

3rd Grade English Language Arts scores were released last month. 69% of our 3rd graders scored a 3 or higher which is 9 points higher than recorded two years ago. It was also 11 points above the state average.

In the EOCs, the district saw huge gains. For Algebra 1 our students in grades 4-12 jumped from 51% scoring a 3 or higher to 68%. Students taking the Algebra 2 EOC saw significant gains as well. 65% of our students had a 3 or higher, compared to 54% last year. That compares to the state average of 49%.

Adds Superintendent Tager, “We want to take a closer look at our high school geometry scores, but I want to congratulate our students, teachers and staff for working extremely hard and I hope they recognize that hard work is paying off.”
